Description
St. Miichael's victory over the Devil is portrayed in this statue by Sir Jacob Epstein, mounted on the side of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1958.
The American-born British sculptor was said to have been a pioneer of modern sculpture, producing controversial pieces which challenged conventions of the time.
The display is mounted on the side of the Cathedral, which was rebuilt after the devastation of the Blitz in the 1940s.
Coventry Cathedral was left gutted and totalled after it was targeted by the German air forces, with Winston Churchill visiting the city to analyse the devastation in the aftermath. The image was taken in 1987 by Gordon James.
