Specification and History:
Weight : 34 tons.
Engine & Transmission : Gardner 8L3 with 204bhp at 1200rpm. 3-speed gearbox using a direct drive clutch providing automatic gear change without loss of torque. Its final drive is jackshaft mounted which can be seen at the rear of the wheels. The centre pair of wheels are flangeless which were required for tight curves.
History : It was built by Hudswell Clarke, Leeds in 1959 for the Manchester Ship Canal Railway (MSC). It was the first of a small fleet of diesel locos on the Manchester Ship Canal Railway, being numbered D1 “Ashdown”. It is a unique design, with modifications specified by MSC, and the only locomotive of its type preserved.
After its service on the MSC came to an end, it was rebuilt at the Hunslet works as number 8526 and then moved to the Gwent Coal Distribution depot in Newport, Wales gaining the name "Pride of Gwent". Moving into preservation in 1991, it arrived at the Butetown Historic Railway group in Cardiff, and when the Butetown collection was broken up, it moved to the Vale of Glamorgan Railway. Later, it was purchased by the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway. In July 2013, it was exchanged for a diesel loco from Andrew Briddon’s collection located at Peak Rail and re- named “Ashdown”.
The North Dorset Railway (NDR) purchased Ashdown and it arrived at Shillingstone in Sept 2020.
Condition : Arrived in working order, needing a few modifications and a re-paint.
