Description
The British Rail Class 55 Diesel Locomotive seen at the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) near Peterborough.
Powerful locomotives were needed to replace the LNER pacifics on the East Coast Mainline. With two powerful diesel engines, having opposed pistons arranged in a triangular formation, the Deltics were born and at the time of building were 50% more powerful than any other diesel in service. The East Coast naming tradition of fa
mous regiments of the British army and racehorses, started in the Gresley era, was continued. The Deltics proved to be capable of sustained high speed running for BR's east coast mainline services, displacing steam and speeding up the timetable. Even today Deltic fans flock to occasional mainline runs to experience the unmatched power, sound and speed of these locomotives.
