Description
Joseph's Steps/West Cliff Zigzag at Night in Bournemouth, Dorset, England.
Joseph's Steps began as a series of wooden stairs linking perilous cliff paths, between Little Durley Chine and the location of the later West Cliff Lift. They were built by Joseph Cutler from timbers of the wrecked 1861 pier when it was rebuilt between 1877 and 1880. The stairs were extended and joined to make a safer route to the beach before finally being replaced by the West Cliff Zig-Zag path in the late 1930s. Following major engineering work the Zig-Zag was reopened in 1985. The steps/zig-zag slope lead from the West Cliff Pine Walk (once known as the Maze) to the promenade slightly west of the West Cliff Lift. A footpath (alongside Tower Court) links to West Cliff Road.
